Sustainability at the core of our business
At Lotus Asia Tours, we believe that it is our responsibility as a company and individuals to take the necessary steps to avoid or minimize any negative impacts of our operation. Equally important is that, in our unique role as travel agent we can and should actively contribute to a lasting positive impact around us, from our suppliers and customers to our destinations. For this reason, sustainability is considered into every business decision.

To ensure that our commitment to responsible tourism doesn’t just end at good intentions, we are implementing a comprehensive sustainability measures with far-reaching targets and goals. We are not only working internally to reduce our footprint, but also inviting our suppliers, partners, community and clients towards more sustainability. It is our hope that this collective action can make Responsible Tourism mainstream, and not simply a niche.

Learn about our Sustainability Policy

Travelife Partner logo copy copy  Credibility is important to us, and that’s why we are engaging with Travelife, a leading training, management and certification initiative
for tourism companies. Travelife provides a system which helps tour operators and travel agencies to manage and improve social and
environmental impacts by complying with sustainability criteria. In early 2019, Lotus Asia Tours achieved Travelife Partner Status for
all the destinations in which we operate. In 2020, we have successfully renewed this status for another 2 years.
Travelife is a three-stage certification program for tour operators and travel agents: (1) Travelife Engaged; (2) Travelife Partner and (3) Travelife Certified. All our offices are awarded the Travelife Partner (stage 2): Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. The Travelife Partner award is a recognition of our commitment to social and environmental sustainability.

What we're doing now
Here are some of the activities we are currently engaged in internally and externally:
• Carbon neutral tours
As of April 2020, all our scheduled group departures as well as our main private circuits in our new catalogue will be automatically carbon neutral. This means that all greenhouse gas emissions that will be generated by these tours are instantly offset at the time of booking. Currently, we are already offering climate neutral group tours and incentive trips. Learn more about our carbon neutral tour.
• Reducing our footprint
We set an annual goal to reduce our waste, water, energy and paper consumption and regularly monitor them by recording the data. Various measures to reduce the consumption can be seen in the sustainability policy. We have also launched Towards Zero Waste program for all offices. Major single use plastics such as plastic bags, plastic straws and Styrofoam are no longer allowed in the office. The zero waste team in each office meets regularly to assess what waste can be further reduced or avoided entirely.
• Plastic Pollution
Lotus Asia Tours is taking part in combatting plastic pollution by actively reducing single use plastic within our operation and encouraging our suppliers to do the same. We no longer provide complimentary plastic bottles for our customers and can provide alternative solutions by requesting our team. We have also signed the International Tourism Plastic Pledge to show our support to this global problem.
• Collaboration
We collaborate with our suppliers and raise awareness for the topic of sustainability management. We ask our main and frequently used suppliers to sign our sustainability contract, agreeing to our sustainability principles.
• Awareness
Staff are trained regularly on sustainability issues through in-office training and internal sustainability memo on various relevant sustainability issues and tips on what actions they can do at work and at home. To increase engagements, there are also individual and office challenges with a prize.

What's next
Sustainability is a journey and it is crucial to keep improving what we do and raise the bar for ourselves. Here are some of the immediate actions that we will take within 2021-2022:
  •            • Work more on our ability to influence the conduct of our suppliers including by assessing their level of sustainability and providing an incentive to do better.
  •            • Increase awareness for our clients and end customers on sustainability issues through various channels of communications.
  •            • Measure and monitor our internal CO2 emissions to set reduction goals and offset the remaining unavoidable ones.
  •            • Increase our positive impact portfolio by improving the sustainability level of our existing offers and creating new ones.
