Indonesia's largest island is also
its most rugged. Sumatra's spine is constructed of more
than 90 volcanoes and nearly three-quarters of its land
is covered with rain forest. Sumatra is a traveler's
dreamland with many rare vegetation and animals, including
species of tiger, rhino, and orangutan unique to the
island.
Most tourists arrive at Medan in the north to visit
the famous Lake Toba or Gunung Leuser National Park
(orangutans). Many then travel south by road trough
beautiful mountainous terrain to Bukittinggi or Padang
to explore the Minangkabau highlands.
